Information for New York Owners of Recalled Toyotas

[En Español]

In February 2010 Attorney General Cuomo announced an agreement with Toyota Motor Sales USA, Inc. (“Toyota”) to facilitate vehicle repairs for the Toyota owners in New York affected by the recent recall.

The recalls at issue affect more than 500,000 vehicles in New York and were announced on: September 29, 2009 for faulty floor mats; January 21, 2010 for sticky gas pedals; February 8, 2010 for brake failure in certain hybrid vehicles; and February 12 for driveshaft issues in certain Tacoma 4WD trucks.

In response to safety concerns of motorists reluctant to drive their recalled vehicles until the repairs are complete, Attorney General Cuomo requested that Toyota provide additional accommodations, including alternative transportation and/or reimbursement for transportation expenses.

Those accommodations include:

  • Pickup and return of the vehicle by a dealership representative or by flatbed truck
  • Transportation for the customer to the dealership and/or to his or her place of work
  • Alternate transportation, such as a rental car, a loaner vehicle, or taxi reimbursement, for the reasonable period that the customer is unable or unwilling to use his or her car
  • Expedited scheduling of repairs

These accommodations will be provided by New York Toyota and Lexus dealers at no cost to the owner. Toyota will reimburse its dealers for the full cost of providing the agreed accommodations.

To benefit from these increased protections, Cuomo urges concerned consumers to contact their local Toyota dealer and ask for assistance.

While many of the recalled vehicles in New York have already received the recall- prescribed repairs, the majority of affected vehicles have not yet been repaired. In fact, most affected vehicle owners have not even received notification letters advising them to schedule the repairs with their local dealers.
